Turn Down the Volume
Another thing that you can do to keep your computer running at a good speed is to make sure that it has enough space. You should strive to keep the volume of data that you have on your hard drive to a minimum. It can be quite tempting to fill your C drive with all sorts of software – from productivity software to games and many other things. The thing is, with each program that you add, you are contributing to the loss of speed. If you happen to have multiple hard drives, install those programs that you won’t be using very much to the secondary drive. If you have a lot of photos, documents, or other types of data, consider keeping that stuff on the second drive too. A drive that is half empty is good, but once you get down to less than 5% of open space, expect to have significant lag times with everything that you do.
Safety First
If you want to keep your computer running smoothly, you need to make sure that it is protected. Make sure that you never go online without having an anti – virus program installed and running. This rule is one that is critical. Never check your email or go online without this. It isn’t enough to just have an anti – virus program installed, though. You also need to make sure that it is always kept up to date. Countless computers get infected with various viruses on a daily basis. Having to take the computer to be repaired after a virus can cost you hundreds of dollars. Anti – virus programs will typically cost under $50. You do the math.
Air It Out
If you want to avoid malfunctions, make sure that your computer is placed in an area that has good ventilation. Also, make sure that the air vents on your computer aren’t obstructed so that you will avoid it overheating because this can lead to defects occurring with the internal components. Overheating can also lead to quite a few other issues. If your computer is a laptop, avoid putting it on cloth or soft materials such as on your bed because the air vents can become blocked. Make sure you always have it on a flat, hard surface.
Clean It Out
Make sure that you periodically clean out the interior of your computer. Try to keep it free from dust that can accumulate inside the case of the computer. This can also accumulate on the fan, the circuitry and the vents for the power supply. You can use cans of compressed gas for this. Make sure to do this at least twice a year. By doing this, you can keep things like overheating and damage to the circuitry to a minimum. Just remember to unplug it first.
By doing these small things, you will be surprised at how fast your computer can be running again. These things will also ensure that your computer is running at top speed and performance for as long as possible.
